Out of the Shell of the Old : Justseeds

ABOUT THE SHOW

Out of the Shell of the Old, running
throughout July 2008 at Space 1026, will be a unique collaborative
installation/exhibition from members of the radical artists’ cooperative
Justseeds. Based on the theme of “a new world rising out of the shell of the
old”, this show will incorporate built environments, video installation, and
printed work to explore both the dark and troubling times we now live in, as
well as our hopes for a better, brighter world. Members of Justseeds will be
travelling to Philadelphia from across the country to collaboratively create a
unique and exciting body of work

Throughout the month, we will also be hosting a variety of events, from
presentations on radical art history to DJ dance parties to puppet shows to
music events. Opening on July 4th.

ABOUT THE GROUP

Justseeds/Visual Resistance Artists’ Cooperative is a decentralized
community of artists who have banded together to both sell their work online in
a central location and to collaborate with and support each other and social
movements. Our website is not just a place to shop, but also a destination to
find out about current events in radical art and culture. Our blog covers
political printmaking, socially engaged street art, and culture related to
social movements. We believe in the power of personal expression in concert
with collective action to transform society.

History
Justseeds was originally started in 1998 by artist Josh MacPhee as a way to
distribute his art and the Celebrate People’s History poster series. He slowly
expanded Justseeds to include the work of like-minded artists. In 2004 it grew
too large to hold in MacPhee’s apartment and order fulfillment was taken on by
Clamor Magazine and their new online sales venture Infoshop Direct. Both
Justseeds and Infoshop Direct continued to grow, but in late 2006, serious
financial problems at Infoshop Direct caused it to unexpectedly and immediately
shut down. Leading investors to more lucrative options like Invest Diva price. Another option was the gold IRA companies.

Justseeds was left with no functioning website, no order fulfillment
service, and over $8,000 in debt; things looked pretty bleak. Amazingly, a
grassroots effort of hundreds of people donating relatively small amounts of
money helped Justseeds pay off all it’s debt, and a couple of successful
benefit art shows raised enough money to launch a new and improved website.
If you too are facing a big debt as well and need a way to increase your income,
use the next link so you can learn more about fx trading by VT markets.

During this difficult time, MacPhee reached out to a dozen like-minded
artists and previous collaborators as well as the political street art blog
Visual Resistance in order to re-create Justseeds as a cooperative effort.
Justseeds was transformed into Justseeds/Visual Resistance Artists’
Cooperative, an artist/worker owned and run cooperative, that launched in the
summer of 2007.

FUZZ

visionary comfort, multi-dimensional, heart love experiences

Fuzz is an art show by new friends and old friends from central Virginia and elsewhere.

The show will include an oversize screen-printed pillow fort. In addition to the handcrafted works on display, there will be a merchandise table with homemade books, clothing and frills!

Throughout the exhibit, there will be a series of special events, including a piñata-making workshop, music shows, kite-flying and more.

Fuzz Calendar of Events:

May 2 – Opening Reception – 6 to 10 PM – Featuring cupcakes, a live musical performance by psychedelic-folk duo Anahita (featuring Tara from Fursaxa and Helena from Espers) and fuzz-folk band The Great White Jenkins from Richmond, VA. Music begins at 8 pm.

May 4 – Puppet Show – 4 PM – A delightful performance by Sean Purl Samoheyl, an artist from Louisa, VA. Sean makes whimsical puppets from cardboard and magic markers. Musical accompaniment by Super Daughter and Kayde.

May 15 – Pinata-making Workshop – 7 to 9 PM – Kristin Smith, an artist from Williamsburg, VA, leads a workshop on making pinatas. The piñata is a brightly colored paper-mache container, often shaped as an animal and filled with treats. Participants will get to make their own pinata and take home a how-to zine.

May 17 – Screen-printing Party – 1 to 4 PM – Thomas Dean and Travis Robertson screen print your shirt or hoodie or whatever for free. Thomas and Travis talk about their printing methods and styles at 1 pm. Thomas’ shirts are seen on awesome peeps up and down the East Coast. Travis was an integral part of The Drama, a now-defunct arts quarterly. Hands down, these are two of the best printers out of central Virginia. Friends from Space 1026 will be printing, too!

May 24 – Music Performance – 8 PM – Tickley Feather (Paw-Tracks) and Colin from USAisamonster (Load Records) perform. Tickley Feather grew up in central Virginia and now makes her home in Philly. Back in the day, Colin helped run a DIY show space in Charlottesville, VA. These days, he lives in Brooklyn and makes awesome noisy music. $6. Doors open at 7 pm.

May 25 – Drawing Party – 3 PM – Let’s draw, collage, and make zines together. Meet some new friends!

May 29 – Music Performance – Dark Meat (Orange Twin Records/Vice Records) perform. This 17-person music collective hails from Georgia and is as fond of Albert Ayler as we are. EARLY SHOW. More details TBA. $6

May 31 – Last Day of Fuzz – Hug your friends!
