Space 1026 is excited to present Ultra-Bluster, a group show featuring new work by Philadelphia artists Kerry Kenney and Rodger Binyone. Ultra-Bluster is a collectively conceived universe of visual art, music and table game systems exploring the motifs and concepts of mythology, cosmology, geometry and science fiction. Kenney uses the airbrush to blend the imaginary and the hyper real, weaving futuristic loose soccer themes into multi-player, mini sport arena, gaming systems. Binyone and Kenney expound upon a visual vocabulary rooted in their music experimentations with co-collaborator Jesse Van Anglen, to release a screen printed 3-D elemental, UV light reactive, & partially phosphorescent book/zine. As music is intrinsic to ceremony, tournament anthems in the guise of an Ultra-Bluster soundtrack will play throughout. More friends rally in team formation to initiate the plane for this interactive playing field. Space 1026 gallery is now a synergy of gaming stations, prints, and audio enhancements exploring the societal paradigm of the ritual and the sacred within the social narrative of sports, all made possible by you the guest player, please come join us and play!

MAT TONELLI JAMES JOHN SMALL

Mat Tonelli and James John Small, both dealing in constructs of moments and the sublime, find new ways to push paint in directions that follow the footsteps of Abstract Expressionists, as well as drawing elements from those considered New European. The two have many dissimilarities in their process and inspiration, but their work somehow intersects at a point, which led them to collaborate not only in a joint show, but in the execution of works of art as well. If you wanted to label these works, you could call it landscape painting; a spontaneous, organic and fitting subject matter they showcase in X CROSS.
The plane we see into on the surface is a moment of tranquility and chaos, a meditation of the awe of man in the natural world. The beauty of landscape, a base for subject matter is the reflection of what is relative to a certain individual.
While Tonelli uses form, color and shape to influence the creation of a scene, Small uses images, whether it be his own or a historical documentation, to direct the flow of his work. Often starting using washes and drips of paint, Tonelli allows the medium to dictate action from the beginning and mechanically fills space with patterns, a perfect counterpart for the tedious carving that Small employs. The two intersect at a point where they are bound to nothing but the aesthetic.

Space 1026 is pleased to present Unfold All Over, an upcoming solo exhibition of new paintings by Lynnea Holland-Weiss. Unfold All Over is filled with large figurative paintings full of mood, color and pattern that delve into our human instincts and the mystery of being.
How does one navigate the unknown? The process of making decisions, the course of actions and the limitlessness of how it all may unfurl. This body of work reflects on the crammed noise and unsure banter as well as the in between moments of clarity and decisive momentum. Life progresses and unfolds, and these large figurative paintings capture the moments and feelings involved in traveling through change and transition. Lynnea states that “with painting, I am always more interested in creating a mood, than telling a story. I want to evoke, rather than inform. The specificity of the experience is no longer important, the underlying tone or mood is what I am after.” The color and the way in which each figure is painted, whether flat and graphic, loose and gestural, or rendered and realistic, often expresses even more than that which is being represented. This variety of approaches then creates a complex visual and emotional dialogue within each painting.
Lynnea Holland-Weiss is a painter originally from Oakland, CA. There she received her BFA from California College of the Arts. She spent last year traveling around the country and abroad painting murals, and has now found herself settled in Philadelphia, PA. Her experiences on the road and moving across the country are undeniably reflected and represented in Unfold All Over. Lynnea’s murals and street art live in California, New Mexico, Louisiana, Ohio, Massachusetts and Brazil. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, Philadelphia and Atlanta, and she was an Artist in Residence in Hawaii through the Holualoa Foundation for Arts and Culture. Her background is in Dance, therefore the human body, its expression, gestures and movement, often inspire and inform her painting practice, process and the content of her work.
Monday night at Space 1026! Bill Daniel “Tri-X-Noise” – One night photo show with live music performed by the Baltimore String Felons!
Hobo filmmaker, phototramp Bill Daniel is back on the road with a pop-up photo show comprised of 30 years of 35mm photographs beginning with the early 80s punk scene in Texas, featuring all of your favorite old school punk bands. Daniel has continued to document various sub cultures using the same camera/lens/flash and Kodak Tri-X film for over 30 years. This exhibit, all non-digital darkroom prints, charts a path starting with punk shows in Austin and crawls through various subcultures, from the 90s graffiti scene in San Francisco, freight hopping scenarios, art openings in Los Angeles, house shows in Louisiana, generator shows on the Monongahela River, etc… all seen through Daniel’s signature spelunker style flash-lit vision.

Space 1026 is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition, Please Pardon Our Appearance, by Jacob Lunderby. This exhibition opens Friday, Oct. 3, 2014 with a reception from 7-10 pm. For this exhibition, Lunderby depicts images of windows that have been digitally modified and layered over enamel paint on wood panel. While the production of work includes the use of digital resources and printing, the artist’s objective is to see the work in a context of painting.
The paintings of windows originate from one of two gestures: blocking out to prevent observation into an interior space, or covering a break to arrest fracturing of the window surface. As with the vernacular of painting, the images of windows shift between presentation of depth, surface tension and reflectiveness. The marginal materials used as devices to control vision and the sense of precarious formalism found in this meshwork of image and pattern provides a generative model to engage layers of attention, materiality and durations of time, from the context of a restaged image to the life span of a painting.
Through the process of using images that gesture towards methods of concealment, containment and protection, Lunderby uses painting to engage the potential to contain, disrupt or direct vision, and address the image/painting object in its complex relationship to time and context.
Jacob Lunderby is an artist, educator and preparator based in Philadelphia, PA. His recent exhibitions include: Redactor, Pentimenti Gallery, Philadelphia, PA (solo); Cephalopod Interface, Okinawa Prefectural Art Museum, Naha City, Okinawa; Confiscape, Circa Gallery, Minneapolis, MN; The Implication, Emory and Henry College, Emory, VA (solo); Painting Zombies, Regis Center for the Arts, Minneapolis, MN; Heaven on Earth, Little Berlin, Philadelphia, PA; Minnesota Museum of American Art, St. Paul, MN; and more. He received an MFA from the University of Minnesota (2002) and BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design (1998). Lunderby is represented by Pentimenti Gallery, Philadelphia.
