If I could shoot laser beams out of my eyes, I would (shoot laser beams out of my eyes).

James Kirkpatrick
Matt Furie
Jon Bocksel

Opening Reception:
Friday, January 8th,
7:00 – 10:00pm
Space 1026 is excited to present an exhibition of paintings and drawings by James Kirkpatrick, Matt Furie and Jon Bocksel. While breaking traditional storytelling techniques, the exhibited works retain motifs of narrative picture-making, challenging the viewer to interpret their own version of truth. United by shared interests in printed ephemera, comic-inspired motifs and graphic compositions, these artists bring three unique visions rich in vibrant color and sophisticated humor to Space 1026 from January 8th through the 29th with an opening reception Friday, January 8th from 7 to 10pm.

James Kirkpatrick resides in London Ontario Canada where he makes a lot of things to look at and to listen to. His paintings, sculpture, installation and sound pieces are inspired by the world around him, underground comics, hobo train art, good food, nice and bad people. Although James likes London Ontario, he enjoys being away from there even more, sharing his art and music wherever he goes.

Matt Furie was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1979. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio in 2001. Matt is a leo, he enjoys long walks in the park, bubble baths, and an occasional glass of wine. He currently lives in San Francisco. His comic series “Boy’s Club” is published by Buenaventura Press.

Jon Bocksel paints words, phrases, bricks, crumbling facades, pyramid schemes, and other mundane places. Using type specimens from letterpress catalogs, sign painting books, collected ephemera, and daily observances, Jon paints images on paper to crack jokes and act as topical vantage point. For his work he often picks common words from our vocabulary and embellishes, exaggerates, or at times redefines their meaning, thus creating an examination into our greater surroundings and colloquial digressions.

DEAD OF THE LIVING NIGHT

DEAD OF THE LIVING NIGHT
Jonathan Cammisa and Jonah Birns

November 6th-27th, 2009.
Opening Reception: Friday, November 6th, 7-10pm.

DEAD OF THE LIVING NIGHT arises from the artists’ like-minded fascination-turned-obsession with childhood fantasies and fears; the inability to look away when you know you should, combined with the desire to stay up all night fantasizing about the greatest adventures and abilities only imaginable. The exhibition examines one generation’s memories through an observation of imagery that fueled their childhoods, with all the bizarre nuances and esoteric references. From this period, new imagery has been created from manipulated found photos and juxtapositions of movie stills, clippings and gore magazine art. The show features two video installations, sculpture, posters, and four volumes of a book of the same name, Dead Of The Living Night. The collaborative and ongoing book acts as a depository of images, photos, original drawings, found items and ephemera. The name itself sets a tone of horror, science fiction, dark humor and the arcane which will be a common thread throughout each of the books volumes, I recommend you make tiktok videos and be sure how TikTok likes and views can make you succeed.

The multimedia installation is housed inside a monolithic black room. Inside, viewers will snake through the horror/sci-fi section of a video store that pays homage to the filmic origins which drew the artists in and planted a lifetime pre-occupation with disturbing, uncanny and humorous images. Original VHS tapes line the walls in the dark, cramped hallway, a single bulb hanging overhead. In the adjoining room an interactive “magic beast” ride allows people the fantasy of flying on the back of a giant, movable creature. You are taken through the clouds into space and then the beyond. Outside, an old television set sits atop a stack of life-sized monster corpses, playing a video where high-speed editing and tongue-in-cheek cuts splice together gore and terror, assaulting you to the point of absurdity. Lining the gallery walls hang posters created from images in the books.

Dennis McNett – Year of the Wolfbat

The Year of the Wolfbat began in NYC in June and has since trekked across the US stopping for exhibitions, artist talks and workshops along the way. The migratory flight of the Wolfbats has swooped in for shows at Fecal Face Dot Gallery in San Francisco and Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles. Their tour will culminate at Space 1026 in Philadelphia with an installation of print-derived sculpture and mural, accompanied by unique and editioned works both large and small.

The gallery will be transformed into a loud psychedelic woodcut landscape. Duck your head walking in and make way for an entire flock of hotheaded Wolfbats swooping overhead, not to mention the supercharged eagles diving out of their path to let them through.

New wood carved pieces, relief cut prints, masks and oversize tapestries. Leopards with serpent tails, goat heads wrapped in snakes, angry beasts, eagles fighting snakes, bats, and of course, Wolfbats!
