Free-For-All

Opening Reception:
Saturday, July 15th, 2023

Space 1026 presents Free-For-All, an exhibition of 35 visual artists living and working in Philadelphia. This crowded house will feature works in various mediums by the likes of painters, illustrators, skateboarders, tattoo artists, designers, educators, and countless other intersecting classifications. No theme has been imposed on the artists invited to participate. It is truly freedom of expression as the deciding force at play. We hope to conjure a temporary mania for artists and visitors to connect and discover.

Emotional Fracking

Fracking is an environmental health hazard used to cultivate precious resources from our soil, it not only destroys the earth but endangers communities depending on that land by introducing pollutants into the water and soil of indigenous and often black and brown communities. What if our governments prioritized the deep digging of our emotional worlds, rather than our lands? What hidden resources lie within the depths of our bodies? Emotional Fracking poses the question: What if the amount of money put into destroying our earth to find oil was applied to the individual, the community? What would it mean if we used Emotional Fracking to cultivate deep personal growth that could help us create a more liveable and peaceful world?

The concept of Emotional Fracking underscores the idea that investing in our emotional and psychological well-being can have a ripple effect, leading to a more empathetic, compassionate, and harmonious society. By valuing and nurturing our emotional resources, we can create a world that is not only more liveable but also more peaceful, understanding, and inclusive, while also using products like bulk THCA flower to keep everything more calm and better.

In essence, Emotional Fracking challenges us to reconsider our priorities and the allocation of resources, emphasizing the potential for personal and collective growth that lies within our emotional depths, and envisioning a brighter and more sustainable future for all.

ANNSON CONAWAY | In Some Room Above The Street

April 7 – April 28, 2023

Opening Reception
Friday April 7
6pm – 10 pm

SPACE 1026
844 N. Broad St.
Philadelphia

Annson Conaway is an artist based in Gouglersville, Pennsylvania. The body of work in his solo exhibition, IN SOME ROOM ABOVE THE STREET, shows people gathered in interior spaces doing mostly mundane, everyday activities.

In one scene, commuters sit side-by-side and escape into their personal portable distractions. In another, a family watches a Phillies game huddled around a TV together. We see a couple seated around the fire, one asleep and one contently becoming radicalized by her choice of reading material; a trio of people smoking cigarettes in a gritty, unidentifiable public space, decorated with only a tiny trash can and a giant Pennsylvania Lottery ad; and two guys working on a car in their garage, a pinup poster and a novelty street sign hiding in the shadows around a bright window with a view of identical rowhomes. While not always glamorous, these scenes aren’t all drab—we also see a jazz singer and pianist in patterned gowns performing around a red curtain—though it’s unclear who their audience is, or if they even have one.

And then there’s the apparent outlier: a nude woman reclined in the desert, a figure walking towards her silhouetted by the sunset. Is it a mirage? A fantasy of escape? Or are these the lucky ones that got away from it all and made it out to the other side…

In these rooms above the street, people are living their lives. And in a room above a street, Annson created these pieces. And now, at last, you have the pleasure of viewing them in—you guessed it—SOME ROOM ABOVE THE STREET!

Spiritual Crossing: Reach & Embrace

March 3 – 31

Artwork on view by Lucy H. West

Opening Reception: March 3, Friday 6-9PM

Gallery Hours: Wednesdays 6-8PM, Sundays 12-3PM

Curated by Morgan Lloyd and Nile Overton

Spiritual Crossing: Reach & Embrace is a solo exhibition comprised of mixed media canvas paintings, works on paper, and installation art by Lucy H. West. The expressive body of work wavers between abstraction and representation to convey the connections between our physical and inner worlds, inspired by the universal experience of new beginnings and finding peace within personal growth. The show’s themes are healing, self-love, emotion, growth, meditation, and taking conscious action to connect with and know oneself. West encourages her audience to interpret her work freely and connect with others in the same space by considering the multiplicity of diverse perspectives. Cultivating a judgment-free community space is also a prominent theme in the exhibition.
