June’s Collection

Check out this article on Billy Penn by Space 1026er June Armstrong!

The glint of foil and brightly colored packaging stands out among the street gunk one normally encounters along the sidewalks and gutters of Philadelphia.

It’s a relatively new kind of litter for the city: disposable bags for holding pocket-sized amounts of CBD gummies.

Just as craft beer companies make a lot of effort to create unique identities through label design, weed packaging now must stand out. Medical marijuana dispensaries and boutiques have begun to proliferate around the region, carrying products that cater to a variety of personalities and tastes.

These heavily branded, single-use containers inevitably end up left behind wherever people congregate for fun. The odor-proofing baked into the bags makes them durable, able to withstand rain or dirt.

Once you start noticing them, you’ll see them in nearly every neighborhood in Philadelphia.

Many of the pocket-sized bags come from growers on the West Coast, where cannabis is legal, and weed is grown by increasingly professional enterprises. It’s a competitive market, and consistent design and layout can help differentiate one brand from another.

SpaceTV & Art Shopping Network

Space 1026 is taking DIY to the ~virtual stage~ and will debut its own take on the quintessential home shopping channel experience. Art Shopping Network (ASN) is set to premiere 4 episodes, airing Thursdays in April at 7PM on Twitch & Instagram. This boutique cyber experience will allow viewers to act as art appreciators & shoppers, while reveling in the familiar dashes of personality that make Space 1026 the immersive, zany, sincere, and raucous place many have come to know it as.

Each installment of ASN will focus on a particular category of affordable artist-made items — Objects/Tabletop/Housewares, Clothing & Wearables, Works on Paper, and Health & Wellness — though the traditional trappings of home shopping quickly fall to the wayside, like layers of tissue being shooed away to reveal that hot, weird late-night purchase you’ve been waiting to display on the mantel. In one episode, this pulsating cornucopia of for-sale artisanal goods will be featured against the lush, cabineted backdrop of Tony Soprano’s capicola’d kitchen (bless you, greenscreen). In another episode, viewers can tune in to watch the frantic hawkings of a Bling Ring member lost in sheer capitalist ecstasy, as they give a virtual tour of Paris Hilton’s puppy turd-dappled walk-in closet.

You may be wondering at this very moment, just whom will be leading you through that relishing modern dance of Do-I-or-Do-I-Not-Buy-That-Elusive-Thing-Which-Deep-Down-I-Dearly-Know-I-Must-Have-As-It-Shall-Complete-Me, yes? …

…The answer to your online shopping dreams is no other than comedian, artist and self-proclaimed ACME Supermarkets heiress Rose Luardo. Here to ooze hopped-up Lisa Rinna realness, with some John Waters razzle-dazzle to boot, Rose will walk her virtual army of online shopping pals through the in’s and out’s of the items they most covet, while dropping delectable tidbits about the weirdo artists who made ‘em! Friends and members of the Space will also join in remotely, as they call in to dish a customer review, or model a particular item.

Rose and ASN guests will serve as a conduit of sorts to the shut-in masses, as they roleplay with the item that has rendered them Never the Same; whether it be an original artwork, a tincture, or a tote, these products promise to transform your SOUL, if only they can reach your grasp through contactless delivery!

Tune in at 7PM on  April 1st, 8th, 15th, & 22nd on Twitch & Instagram

AFTER FOREVER

AFTER FOREVER is a solo exhibition of surreal sculptures by renowned artist, Adam Wallacavage, and curated by James Oliver. The exhibition at HOT•BED will present sculptures in an immersive fantastical environment from two ongoing series, Octopus Chandeliers and Kitsch Collaborations. AFTER FOREVER uncovers the intricacies of Wallacavage’s practice and gives a closer look into the artist’s unrestrained techniques. The exhibition will be open to the public from December 18, 2020 through March 6, 2021.

The Octopus Chandeliers are a study on form, function and whimsy; candy-colored bulbous octopi with puckered tentacles. Mixing Art Nouveau, Surrealism and a lifetime fascination with the sea, Wallacavage’s infamous Octopus Chandeliers use a unique combination of traditional plastering techniques combined with Contemporary materials such as: epoxy resin, iridescent powders, and glitter. Though Wallacavage sculpts the works by hand, his touch is indiscernible in the final product, a testament to the artist’s level of skill. Typical of the artist’s practice, the Chandeliers deftly mix form and function. Light the works with candles or light bulbs and they’ll not only provide a source of light, but the work will activate; the dripping wax adding to the tentacle’s oozing effect.

AFTER FOREVER also presents new works from Kitsch Collaborations, a series of transformed figurative lamps sourced from beloved Philadelphia antique stores, Jinxed. With Wallacavage’s effect, classic figurative lamps metamorphose into fluorescent ‘realm fantastic’, with a cast of characters (frogs, fairies and more) straight out of a fairytale. The series began in the early 2000’s as a way for the artist to poke a little fun at the highbrow world of art; however, over time, the ethereal works became a symbol of the imagination, creativity and fantasy Wallacavage brings to his art.

As a part of AFTER FOREVER, Wallacavage and HOT•BED collaboratively constructed ‘fantasy vignettes’ comprised of furniture, decor, objet d’arts and plants to complement the design-forward works. AFTER FOREVER’s merger of art and design reflects HOT•BED’s mission to bridge the gap between the creative spheres.
