Pinata-making Workshop

Kristin Smith, an artist from Williamsburg, VA, leads a workshop on making pinatas. The pi? is a brightly colored paper-mache container, often shaped as an animal and filled with treats. Participants will get to make their own pinata and take home a how-to zine.

So I was going through old magazines last night after I got back from California and I came across the Tokion Disobedients issue from like 2002.

Beyond being a trip down memory lane of artists who's work I used to (some of whom I still do) drool over and steal from, it was a nice reminder of the energy and excitement that comes with young people making stuff together.

If sensation was sparked by the work actually in the magazine, or if it was more of a memory of where I was when I got the issue, I can't say. Either way, it was nice to see 1026 mentioned alongside The Luggage Store, New Image and Alife as a venue that fostered those then young artists.

·Clothing Swap May 10, 2008 8PM "Wendy's favourite time for sewing and darning was after they had all gone to sleep." Clothing Swap and All-night Alteration with Wendy Jane Hyatt, Hilary Price, K-fai Steele, Margaret Rolicki, Leslie Salazar, Stephanie Brown, and Jennifer Rice

The Padlock Gallery will play host to our second installment of clothing swaps. The purpose of the swap is pretty simple. Participants bring unwanted garments and share with those who may want to save, re-use or alter the cast-aways. The artists on hand will collaborate after the swap to adorn each others bodies as a simple act of survey, measurement and assessment. Participants will construct individually tailored garments for eachother or themselves by cross sharing seamstress, patternmaking, bust making and other communally held skills. We will work late into the night, using the recycled material source (the swap) to make a type of garment habitat for each unique person based on their dimensions and daily activities. The result should be a sort of life-uniform or even superhero costume which would enable that person negotiate all range of circumstances and adventures.

The Philadelphia Film Festival is showing a program of short films on WEDNESDAY featuring two works by 1026 members Ted Passon and Dave Dunn. Ted is screening a short work-in-progress version of the SPACE 1026 DOCUMENTARY he's been working on and Dave Dunn is screening HELIUM, a short made for the ICA last year involving new uses for disposable video cameras. Also in the program are videos from a bunch of our pals including: Andrew Watson, Sara Zia Ebrahimi, Chris Thomas (showing a mindblowing work-in-progress animation for the Extraordinaires), and Ryan Trecartin showing an excerpt from his new work I-BE AREA starring lots of Philly kids.

Cartune Xprez is BACK in Philly with an 80-minute program of short animated videos and performances celebrating the wilderness of imagination through animation. Featured artists include Bruce Bickford, Shana Moulton, Takeshi Murata, Eric Dyer, Martha Colburn, and more. Alongside this cartoon theater Hooliganship will be performing to an animation of their own in which audiences strap on a pair of 3D glasses to bear witness to a televised parade gone awry.

The collective resumes of the featured artists includes collaborations with Frank Zappa and major exhibitions at the Whitney Biennial, the MOMA in New York, the Sundance Film Festival, and many other institutions throughout the world.

There's a photo show called 12x36 that opens FRIDAY April 4th at 222 Gallery in Philadelphia, and on April 5th at Gallery Revisited in Los Angeles, and ArtSpaceHue in Seoul, Korea.

They picked five artists from each city and gave us each a point-and-shoot lomographic camera with colored filters over the flash, and one roll of film. They are showing three pictures from each artist as well as the contact sheets.

I am in the show as well as 1026er Dan Murphy and our pal Randall Sellers among others.

Delilah and I made it safe and sound to St Louis for Prints Gone Wild at the Contemporary Art Museum - we started setting up and Bill and Delilah couldn't help themselves when they saw Dennis and Mike's newest creations. We've heard there is going to be some sort of branding performance tomorrow...god help us.

Matt Leines (Jungleland, 2007) is showing at Clementine Gallery this month. The opening reception for his show, The Righteous Age is this Saturday, February 23rd from 6-8.

Clementine is at 623 W. 27th St. in New York. It runs through March 29th.

I'll be screening some new stuff that I'm still in the middle of working on at a works-in-progress screening hosted by the Philadelphia Independent Film and Video Association. The screening is tonight and I'll be showing three pieces including a short 20minute cut of an on-going Space 1026 documentary, which will also be playing at the Philadelphia Film Festival in April.

There'll also be work from local filmmakers Nhiue Do and Bryan Karabostsos with a nerdy discussion to follow for nerds.

Join PopRally for a special night with Martin Mazorra and Mike Houston, printmakers and founders of Cannonball Press, along with artists from Space 1026, a unique creative community located in downtown Philadelphia.

Cannonball Press is a Brooklyn-based organization that produces affordable black and white prints by a number of artists (including Sean Star Wars, David Rees, David Ellis, Maya Hayuk, and Swoon.) In addition to their own art, Mazorra and Houston also work together to create large format woodcut prints. Space 1026 was founded over a decade ago by a handful of artists and tricksters who organize rowdy public events and outrageous installations at their building and at other institutions. At the heart of Space 1026 is a communal screenprinting workshop where the madness comes to life.

Following presentations by the artists, Gretchen Wagner, Curatorial Assistant in MoMA's Department of Prints & Illustrated Books, moderates a discussion about the artists' work, printmaking, collaborations, and more. A cocktail reception follows the event.

Tickets are $5 and are available at the Museum information and Film desks. You must be twenty-one or older to attend this event.

Giant Robot is proud to present Class Action, paintings and sculpture by Philadelphia-based artist William Buzzell.

Working almost entirely with found wood or metal and common latex house paint, Buzzell's pieces are characterized by a surface of intricate brushwork and often feature three-dimensional elements. William Buzzell dips into the mundane, the practical world and a deep well of popular culture, often using maps, logos, charts, text, and familiar cartoon characters or TV icons to fill every inch of his paintings. A native of Providence, RI, much of Buzzell's early work was installed on the streets of his hometown and New York under the alias Rotgut.

Buzzell is a current member of the Artist Studio/Gallery Space 1026 in Philadelphia. The artist has had major exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Jose, Sweden, and Canada. We are very pleased to offer his first solo show in New York.

We have copies of the new issues of both MEGAWORDS and ANP QUARTERLY in the gallery.

These are two of the most interesting publications to come out in the past few years,

and they are both free.

Save some room in your bag for two copies, one to read and one to give to a friend in 6 months when they get clued in and can't find back issues.

If you're too cold to go rollerskating tonight you might want to check out Silk City's music video screening party. It starts at 9:00pm and features a whole bunch of music videos from groups such as Animal Collective, Spank Rock, Stereolab, and lots more.

They'll also be showing three music videos that I made for Kimya Dawson, Plastic Little, and Sweatheart. So if you wanna see what these look like not on Youtube you should go check it out. There'll be DJing by Julian S. Process.

The city budget is being decided by the end of this month and there is a possibility that Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter's campaign promise of reestablishing an Office of Arts and Culture and art czar may be broken.

January 16: Pen16+Game Lab

This January 16th, Pen 16 combines forces with Game Lab. We will be playing a drawing game, Glinks, which generates large abstract mosaics based on a few simple rules of engagement.

The game is an attempt to crossbreed Cellular Automata with games and the act of drawing, and is still under development.

Non-competitive drawing will also be permitted. And if possible, bring graph paper. 8:00PM- 10:00PM

January 17: Zimoun. Statics III

The PRO HELVETIA Swiss Arts Council and the Culture Department of Berne, Switzerland present:

Swiss installation and sound artist Zimoun performing his "Statics III," as well as performance by New York-based filmmaker Andy Graydon.
