Many will recognize Los Angeles-based photographer Chrissy Piper for her work in the underground punk and hardcore scene. Her high school and college years, divided between Southern California, Colorado and New York, coincided with now legendary moments in the intersecting worlds of D.I.Y. music, skateboarding, and underground art whose personalities can often be found in her photos.

Her first photography collection, The Unheard Music (P.A. Kane, 1997), was unabashed in its interest in the cultural production of society’s fringes. Since then, Piper has continued to revisit this subject through her “Three Records” series, asking the people she photographs to identify three records that changed and/or inspired their lives.

These themed photos, paired with her subjects’ responses, offer a dual portrait. We are privy not just to Piper’s vision of her quarry, but also to that most elusive of landscapes–how we consume, incorporate and respond to music in constructing (and sharing) our own identities.

This show, appropriately titled “Three Records,” features original prints and responses culled from her photo-zine series of the same name, including portraits of familiar faces such as Blake Schwarzenbach (Jawbreaker/Jets to Brazil), Aesop Rock (musician), Rich Jacobs (artist), A.C. Thompson (investigative journalist), Chris Duncan (artist), Dan Yemin (Lifetime, Paint it Black), Scott Kelly (Neurosis/Shrinebuilder), Mackenzie McAlpin (Cool Kid), Tim Barry (Avail/Solo), etc.

Piper’s work has been shown in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Chicago, Austin and Mexico City.
