HILARY WHITE PRESENTS “SEER”! OPENING TOMORROW NIGHT!!!!

unnamed

EXHIBITION: JULY 4TH – JULY 26TH
OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY, JULY 11TH
7-10 PM

A dazzling fog surrounds us.

This vaporous presence in constant flux is made of particles, waves, disturbances, all of which are very real, all of which make up reality itself. We have faith in them some of which have never been seen but only determined by mathematical principal. Still whether we acknowledge them or not they continue in their purpose, and we experience their effects.

This may sound mystical, an army of ghosts at work in the universe but instead we find out these are the basic principals of the different scientific fields: Physics: atoms, quarks, virtual particles, particle wave duality, electromagnetics, sound waves, entropy, time itself. Biology: DNA, RNA, cells, nucleotides, mitochondria. Astronomy: dark matter, black holes, carbon stars…The list is ample and discoveries continue to unfold at an accelerating rate. On the quantum level these are able to be witnessed factors that interact in accordance with their principals to produce a much larger plane of existence containing human life, animal life, plant life, planets, stars, and entire galaxies. To the untrained eye, to those unfamiliar with such microcosms, one could still believe in the effects caused on a macro level. For example we live in an atmosphere that allows life, breath, the rotation of earth to create days… So here we are with this ability to not know the cause of something yet have faith in its effects.

This brings me to the question of faith. What is it? What is this belief we put into practice? I need a starting point. I begin with my own faith. Hebrews 1:11 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Whoa. Wait a minute. Really? A switch to Theology? (deep sigh) Now for some this is the point of departure. The mention of God, Faith, and more specifically a Christian faith does not appeal to all. I take this into consideration. This is my catalyst for beginning a deeper investigation of faith and what it may be. I understand there are many different beliefs and belief systems, but I will use this particular example to begin an investigation into the reading, allowing the question at hand to be looked at critically for the moment.

First back to the question itself: What is faith? “Faith is the substance of things hoped for…” What does this mean? The substance of things hoped for, or maybe we can say the existence of what the heart can long for. I can not long for things I do not know exist. I desire only what can be created or what has been created. A person can live in a cave never experience affection or friendship their entire lives, and they still long for love, they long for relationship. A person can be bed ridden, sick their entire lives, cut off from the outside world and still long for health without ever experiencing it. Now to consider longing for something that does not exist in this experiment does not seem like a plausible hypothesis. We may long for fantastical things but still they can be traced to a deeper longing for something greater than ourselves and this existence. Maybe that points to an eternal plane or “heaven” …Maybe…for now I don’t long for a fohcodikyte because I have either not come to the knowledge of it and how it applies to a desire I may experience, or it does not exist. Again “faith is the evidence of things hoped for…” or in other terms, faith is the substance of what exists that in return a person can long for / desire.

And now the second part “…the evidence of things not seen” the evidence of what is desired manifests in action. A person is hungry and longs for food so they plant seeds and water it, cultivating the earth around it, harvest it. A person longs for love, so they look for it in a partner, they try to manifest it by showing love to others. A person longs for health so they take steps to achieve better habits and attempt to make choices that lead to that effect. People long for a communal existence so they gather, build communities, make towns, plan cities. In short the actions caused by these desires are the effects of the actual “thing” desired being lived out in a real and effectual way. So to bring it full circle…or attempt to… faith then is the actualization of the thing we long for effecting the way we live, here and now.

The question of faith then is seemingly a question of great magnitude. It effects us all.

The greatness faith poses is in the vast plane of possibility, of life generating and being explored, even on this once seemingly volatile terrain between Science and God, the known and the unknown being bridged. Now if I even dare to consider moving forward in this thought, I may become a stranger to comfort, I may have to do away with the addiction of control, I may have to shatter my illusion of what I think reality looks like, what “success” looks like. It is here in the ruins of this pursuit I find truth… a chance to see something new. A glimpse at the fallibility of my own efforts, the disfiguring deception of my dark vanity, my shallow motives, and then beyond to something more… forgiveness, hope, love, people, communities, the world , the universe, all unfolding infinitely each layer more brilliant and complex. A living, growing fractal blossoming into an infinite garden…

…Then I let the moment pass…

I find myself seemingly lost in a jungle of cultural moods, fads. I get stuck in the argument, it’s beauty is taken out of context, manipulated, institutionalized, homogenized until all the wonder of it’s previous stature is twisted and lost in the murky waters of “common-sense”, but even here in my own wrestling, and doubt there is hope. Faith at work. What may be proposed as rationality to some would be considered irrational without belief in the system it evokes. So again, moving forward, let us all take into consideration what our beliefs are hinged on. It will determine how we live, how we think, how we speak, how we see…

The dazzling is all around us. It is waiting to be discovered, waiting to be seen.

SEER is an exhibition of suspended disbelief. A moment to imagine the possible impossible, the eternal. An exploration of wonder, using examples from scientific theory and it’s discoveries, in correlation with Biblical texts, it’s symbolism, and its practice.

“The ghostly presence of virtual particles defies rational common sense and is non intuitive for those unacquainted with physics. Religious belief in God, and Christian belief that God became Man, may seem strange to common-sense thinking. But when the most elementary physical things behave in this way, we should be prepared to accept that the deepest aspects of our existence go beyond our common-sense intuitions.”

-Antony Hewish*

OPENING TOMORROW (FRIDAY, MAY 2ND) NIGHT!!!

SPACE 1026 presents Consider again, that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. A selection of individual and collaborative work by Adam Lovitz and Patrick Maguire

“First, she tried a spoonful from Papa Bear’s great big bowl. “OW!” she yelled, “TOO HOT!”
Next, she tried a spoonful from Mama Bear’s medium-sized bowl. “Brrrrr! TOO COLD!” she complained.
Finally, Goldilocks tried a spoonful from Baby Bear’s tiny little bowl. “YUMMY!” she cried. “THIS IS JUST RIGHT!” Goldilocks ate the entire bowlful.”

The Goldilocks Zone, a distance from a star that would allow the surface temperatures of a planet to be Earth-like and just right for liquid water, marks itself as the best place to look for life similar to ours.

Patrick Maguire and Adam Lovitz have composed works that teeter on the threshold of familiarity and strangeness, at times escaping into the immeasurable. This tension, found in both artists’ practice, occurs in between the space of literal representation and total abstraction. A pupa world is documented, positioning itself amidst a developed and undeveloped state of being.

There are some pieces that caress or disfigure the gravitational pull of life on Earth, whether it be akin to the surface of a stone, or cultural debris on a city sidewalk. While others hover just beyond our atmosphere, transmitting a signal only made visible when looking inside our self.

And who is to say this phenomenon, this awareness, is not as tangible as feeling the warmth of a dying star from the comfort of our home?

VOX POPULI PRESENTS “FORT THUNDER ATTAKS…AGAIN!” @ SPACE 1026

1391562_10152071394069017_496362694_n

Opening Reception:

November 1st, 2013

6 – 10 PM

ARTISTS: Gary (GayWee), Dick Moccasin, jpëgg, Snuggleuptogus, Mixed White, SamE, Lentls, Hannibal Saint Clarice, noname, and Pudgie

As part of CITYWIDE, Vox Populi will present a collaborative project by its members, Fort Thunder Attaks…Again!, at Space 1026. This exhibition and series of programs was conceived of by a group of Vox Populi’s member artists as a reworking of a 1998 exhibition presented at Space 1026 by the Providence based collective Fort Thunder. Vox Populi proposed recreating an exhibition from Space 1026’s archive they felt “defined them,” and Space 1026 chose Fort Thunder Attaks!.

In the past months, Vox members have contacted members from Fort Thunder and Space 1026 who participated in the original exhibition. In addition to speaking with artists, Vox members researched archives online, which resulted in a somewhat disjointed perception of events and histories. Since Fort Thunder existed at a moment when artist spaces began relying more on online documentation and less on printed material, the majority of resources gathered online replicated surfing the Internet from the late 90’s: searching chat rooms, comic reviews, PDFs, youtube and the WayBack Machine Internet Archive. Members uploaded both inspirational and factual images related to Fort Thunder on ftthundy.tumblr.com, which aided in the production of the installation at Space 1026. Vox’s recreation of the exhibition emulates the spirit of both Space 1026 and Fort Thunder while posing questions about history and memory, individual versus collective activity. From the beginning, Vox’s exhibition mimicked Fort Thunder’s philosophy that the individual artist was no longer present, egos were minimized, and aesthetics were unified under a collective identity. Fort Thunder was an artist collective working out of a warehouse in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island, much like Philadelphia’s own rapidly developing neighborhoods. From 1995 through 2001, Fort Thunder artists produced comics, comic tabloids (Paper Rodeo), screenprints, and bands (Lightning Bolt and Forcefield), and hosted events within the same vein. Fort Thunder gained international recognition when members from Forcefield participated in the 2002 Whitney Biennial. Space 1026, a Philadelphia based collective and Fort Thunder regularly collaborated and exchanged programming throughout the 1990s.

The 1998 exhibition at Space 1026 was their first exchange exhibition and featured work that reflected Fort Thunder’s usual maximalist, comic and skateboardinspired aesthetic. Space 1026 was transformed into a funhouse featuring a mannequin with a violin dressed in a neon, patterned, camouflagelike mashup of fabrics, a huge seesaw, and walls plastered with posters and comic art.

EVENTS:

A Night of Noise, Drums, and Wrestling

Friday, November 8, 6 to 11 pm

A celebration of the completion of the exhibition Fort Thunder Attaks…Again! Sound Fort, curated by Catherine Pancake (aka Pudgie) will take place from 6 to 8 pm and feature invited sound artists to perform within the Sound Fort. From 8 to 9 pm, performances will take place within the Drum Fort, designed by Gary (GayWee). Drummers Taylor Baldwin and Laris Kreslins play halfhour improvised drum sessions. Wrestling will commence from 9 to 11 pm. Recalling Fort Thunder’s overthetop costumed wrestling antics, Vox Populi will host Battle of the Artist Collectives! The headlining match will feature collectives Little Berlin and Vox Populi. Artist collectives challenge each other to wrestling matches to become “Heavyweight Champion of the Philadelphia Art Scene.” Visitors who are not in an artist collective but want to wrestle are invited but must be in costume. [Remember, wrestling is not real fighting.]

Philly Comix Jam at Fort Thunder at Space 1026

Tuesday, November 19, 8 to 11 pm

Philly Comix Jam is an open group established in 2008 comprised of comics artists who meet at a bar once a month for a comic jam. During a comic jam, many comic artists collaborate on one comic: traditionally, an improvised narrative from page to page. Philly Comix Jam repurposes this process from panel to panel. In addition to comics jamming, there will be refreshments and streaming music via Fort Thunder’s website from 2001. Bring your own favorite drawing tool: fountain pen, rapidograph, brush pen, sharpie, etc. Paper is provided.

PHILADELPHIA: In conjunction with CITYWIDE Philadelphia, Vox Populi gallery will exhibit Afterlife, a collaborative multimedia installation created by members of the Space 1026 collective. Space 1026 will be one of five collectives – including Marginal Utility, Magic Pictures Gallery, Termite TV, and Basekamp – exhibiting within Vox Populi for the CITYWIDE collaborative effort.

Afterlife is a collaborative installation that transfers the everyday lives of Space 1026’s collective members into the eternal space after death. In a brief, blissful act of existential reinvention, the 1026ers spark a torch of ancient burial practices with the construction of a monumental shrine devoted to and comprised of artwork by its current and former members. Afterlife represents a continuation of the collective’s 16 year commitment to providing open space where a creative individual is free to work and make mistakes, in addition to the collective’s long standing comic appreciation for human error, second chances, and the opportunity for spiritual rebirth.

“CAPTIOUS” BY TYLER HELD, OPENING TOMORROW NIGHT!

1002164_10151517985916924_366243233_n

Space 1026 is pleased to announce the first ever solo exhibition by artist, Tyler Held! OPENING HERE THIS FRIDAY!

About the Show:

These gestures reveal the obscured residue of our physical existence. The unconscious staining of objects we interact with becomes captious and evident of interaction.

The cast carbon fiber and epoxy resin objects display a toxic recipe that becomes overlooked as an attractive facade. While the human discoloring through touch is visually denied. The highly visual contrast suggests a duality, yet what remains is an uncanny reflection of the self.

Opening Reception:

Friday, August 2nd from 7-10 PM
