The Free Library is a group show that will bring together work by an international group of graphic designers and artists whose work engages the world of books, language, writing, bastard modernisms, utopian energies, film, science, nature, literary theory, and the realm of ideas.
Originally exhibited at Riviera Gallery in Brooklyn, The Free Library travels to Philadelphia this year. Over the course of three weeks the show will transform the Space 1026 gallery the into a functional reading room outfitted with prints and posters, installation work, a large pinboard area, bean bags, and books and other publictions available for perusal. The entire space will be designed to encourage visitors to the gallery to spend time reading, hanging out, and interacting with one another. The gallery will also make a limited number of posters and publications available for purchase.
Inspiration for the exhibition design draws on Jean-Luc Godard’s prophetic 1967 film La Chinoise, which follows a group of young French radicals who transform a Paris flat into an ad hoc revolutionary think tank over the course of a summer, as well as the modular architectural spaces of Mayers + Schiff‘s 1973 Acorn School in New York. Each of the participants will also include a selection of books of their choosing in the library.
