For the record here is what is going to be available and when. During the opening, September 4 from 7-10pm, there will be onsite sales available for original work, we accept cash, credit and check. Any editioned work will be available for purchase but no more then 1 copy of each print will be sold to an individual (no your uncle can’t give you money to buy a print for him). new paintings and installation by Lisa Conn
āI once read that wood can handle pain that people cannot. The old medicine men used it as a method of healing. I believe there to be much truth in myth and this exhibition develops my idea of ātree saint girlsā as represented in my most recent work. Einsteinās āSpooky Theoryā, at its most surface level, states that when two particles are joined and later become separated by a spacial distance, should one undergo a change, the other will āfeelā it at almost the exact time. Immediately I see possibility and magic within this thought; and it has the opportunity to take on a mythological presence. Iāve made a series of relief style paintings that cross the threshold into installation, heavily influenced by the magic I find within this theory, exploring it in terms of relationships between my created characters/ creatures and the relationship between said characters and their former selves, imagining an organism dividing into another separate being within the crossroads of a choice. One possibility of the theoryās connection to martyrdom plays into the idea that when a being suffers, perhaps somewhere else in the universe there is another being that
feels that pain with equal force. This theory is a catalyst to inform stories and personalities within each of the saint girls that Iāve created. With this installation I hope to inspire awe and reverence, and at the very least, a moment of escape from personal reality.ā

Mat Tonelli and James John Small, both dealing in constructs of moments and the sublime, find new ways to push paint in directions that follow the footsteps of Abstract Expressionists, as well as drawing elements from those considered New European.Ā The two have many dissimilarities in their process and inspiration, but their work somehow intersects at a point, which led them to collaborate not only in a joint show, but in the execution of works of art as well.Ā If you wanted to label these works, you could call it landscape painting; a spontaneous, organic and fitting subject matter they showcase in X CROSS.
The plane we see into on the surface is a moment of tranquility and chaos, a meditation of the awe of man in the natural world.Ā The beauty of landscape, aĀ base for subject matter is the reflection of what is relative to a certain individual.
WhileĀ Tonelli usesĀ form, color and shape to influence the creation of a scene, Small uses images, whether it be his own or a historical documentation, to direct the flow of his work. Often starting using washes and drips of paint, Tonelli allowsĀ the mediumĀ toĀ dictateĀ action from the beginning andĀ mechanically fills space with patterns,Ā a perfect counterpart for the tedious carving that Small employs.Ā The two intersect at a point where they are bound to nothing but the aesthetic.
