THE ANALOG STUPA

‘The Analog Stupa’
Featuring works from Bonnie Brenda Scott and Michael Gerkovich
Opening Reception December 6, 2008 – 8pm till Midnight
Showing through January 2, 2009 by appointment
Padlock Gallery
1409 Ellsworth Street
Philadelphia, PA 19143
Artists statement:“As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I take a look at my
skateboard and I draw a deep breath. As the Analog Stupa is hovering
there like a pie in the sky or a Checkers brand cheezy fry. You think
you’re safe in the house on the couch eating garbage with your dog and
your dawg and his dog and all. But let us tell you that we came here
from the future just to show a bunch of pictures of rainbows and
pyramids. We’re so impressed that your world is so colorful. It makes
us sad about the Robot Wars of the approaching days. We’re also here to
tell you about a place you can go to avoid the fires and famine and
general discontent of the future shock. Can you dig it?”
Scott and Gerkovich, “We’re married, but we’re Anarchists, so it’s whatever”,
present a collection of works exploring a “spiritual preparation for
the post-modern dust bowl”. Scott’s paintings and ink drawings are
meditatively obsessive and fit perfectly around Gerkovich’s watercolors
and paintings of culturally upset scenarios and personas. The duo will
be presenting together at Padlock, a South Philadelphia’s row
home-cum-gallery, solo works in addition to a collaborative stupa, the
mound like structure typically containing Buddhist relics.

as other art spaces in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Houston, Austin, Palm
Springs and San Francisco. “The Wilderness Society”, Scotts first solo

January 9th-30th, 2009.
Opening Reception: January 9th, 7-10pm

AJ FOSIK AND ANDREW SCHOULTZ
NEW ANCIENT STRUCTURES
Space 1026 is pleased to present AJ Fosik and Andrew Schoultz New Ancient Structures an art exhibition, opening Second Friday January 9th from 7 to 10 pm at 1026 Arch Street in Philadelphia.
Showing for the first time in Philadelphia, San Francisco-based painter Andrew Schoultz joins Philadelphia-based sculptor AJ Fosik to present a collaborative installation at Space 1026. With drawings spilling off the wall and sculptures filling the floor, New Ancient Structures will fill the gallery with an explosion of color, pattern and potent imagery.
AJ FOSIK
Drawing inspiration from his background creating street art and signage, AJ FOSIK is a Philadelphia-based sculptor who creates animal abstractions, or as he calls them “existential fetishes.” Totemic apparitions of ursine beasts and delicately rendered paintings skirt American folk art and psychedelia. Cryptic symbols from overlapping sources, traditional and contemporary, create a dynamic mashup. Fosik has recently exhibited at the L.J. Beaubourg in Paris and White Walls in San Francisco.
ANDREW SCHOULTZ
With his distinctively ornate, intricately rendered imagery, ANDREW SCHOULTZ insinuates a greater state of global frenzy. Themes touching on environmental and social destruction allude to the artist’s awareness of both the environment he creates and the one in which he exists. Schoultz addresses confined space with unlimited possibility, based on his penchant for creating large-scale murals in public spaces. Schoultz has upcoming exhibitions at V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark and Roberts and Tilton in Los Angeles and his work has recently been acquired by the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Giant Robot is proud to present With Friends Like These, a group show featuring new works by Isaac Lin and AJ Fosik.
After graduating from Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 with a BFA in painting, Isaac Tin Wei Lin moved to Philadelphia. There, he became a Space 1026 member, made paintings and screen prints, participated in shows, and worked odd jobs. In 2003, he moved to San Francisco to attend California College of the Arts. Completing his MFA, he attended a two-month long residency at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Having had his fill of school, he returned to Philadelphia where he continues to create art ranging from psychedelic, hyper detailed illustration to found photos adormed with geometric corruption.
Viewers are confronted with cryptic symbols from overlapping sources, both traditional and contemporary, creating a dynamic tension where art and viewer come together in an expanded definition of culture and assumption.
A reception for Lin and Fosik will be held from 6:30 to 10:00 on Saturday, November 8. For more information about the artists, GRNY, or Giant Robot magazine, please contact:

Skateboarding, Action, and Architecture

October 23: PIFAS
Faculty-member Brandon Joyce shares his inexpert opinions on how it is action that anoints architecture with meaning. Calling on street-skating as a high model, he’ll speak about how use, misuse, and transformation can override- or even negate- intent and expression in architectural design.
The talk will be short and followed by a discussion on the topics… and, of course, more skate videos.
Coffee will be served.
