“…the better to hold you with, my dear…” New work by Lisa Conn

“…the better to hold you with, my dear…”
new paintings and installation by Lisa Conn
“I once read that wood can handle pain that people cannot. The old medicine men used it as a method of healing. I believe there to be much truth in myth and this exhibition develops my idea of “tree saint girls” as represented in my most recent work. Einstein’s “Spooky Theory”, at its most surface level, states that when two particles are joined and later become separated by a spacial distance, should one undergo a change, the other will “feel” it at almost the exact time. Immediately I see possibility and magic within this thought; and it has the opportunity to take on a mythological presence. I’ve made a series of relief style paintings that cross the threshold into installation, heavily influenced by the magic I find within this theory, exploring it in terms of relationships between my created characters/ creatures and the relationship between said characters and their former selves, imagining an organism dividing into another separate being within the crossroads of a choice. One possibility of the theory’s connection to martyrdom plays into the idea that when a being suffers, perhaps somewhere else in the universe there is another being that
feels that pain with equal force. This theory is a catalyst to inform stories and personalities within each of the saint girls that I’ve created. With this installation I hope to inspire awe and reverence, and at the very least, a moment of escape from personal reality.”

No Fear new work by Andrew Nigon and Carmen Tiffany
June 5-30TH, OPENING RECEPTION June 5, 7PM-10PM
Space 1026 is kicking off summer with a new exhibition featuring the work of Andrew Nigon and Carmen Tiffany visiting artists from Miami, FL.
No Fear comprises of sculpture, video and prints that are inspiration for punching onward, even in moments of ambivalence.
Inspired by historic fratricidal narratives, Andrew Nigon has created antiheroic wrestlers that fragment their aggression with a reckless assemblage. Plastic body parts made from casts of Nigon’s own body are displayed solely to subvert the figures unbridled malice.
Carmen Tiffany’s puppet play video narrates young characters that might be bullied by Nigon’s fighting brothers. The troupe travels together in a play like adventure on the way to their grown up future. Fulfilling a cycle of destitution the characters accept their fate with a naivety that is both sullen and joyful.
Works grasp tightly as they dangle from the bottom of the social ladder, but as primal behaviors are forced out of a survivalist’s instinct they face a state of a menial existence with abrasive tendencies.

Maze Generation: New Works by Ryan Beck at Space 1026
April 3rd -25th
Exhibition Dates: April 3rd – April 25th
Space 1026 is pleased to present Maze Generation, a solo exhibition of new work by Ryan Beck. Maze Generation is a body of work which represents several months of exploration into the term “maze generation” and ways that it could be applied to Beck’s process. The term first came into his view after seeing a documentary about Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining”. He was intrigued by the descriptions of maze patterns in the film and shortly after, the surrounding concepts and theories of maze generation began relating to the way he approached his work. The paintings in Maze Generation are the result of allowing those theories and various interpretations of the term to lead him through a re-evaluation of his process, application and approach to color. His work frequently pairs muted and watery tones with defined marks and vibrant colors-pairing quiet, ephemeral moments with frenetic activity. Ryan Beck is a Philadelphia based artist who has shown in Philadelphia, New York, Miami, and Los Angeles.
