Liberal Arts

William Buzzell “Liberal Arts” new paintings about Providence’s library system

Sunday, June 7th, 2009 – 4pm-7pm

AS220 – Street Exhibition Space
115 Empire St.
Providence, RI 02903

AS220 is pleased to display the creations from William Buzzell’s month long artist residency at the organization in our street window exhibition space on Empire St. For the month of May, William has worked closely with staff at the Providence library system, including Richard Ring, head of Special Collections, to delve into the library’s long history. As the son of a librarian himself, a former employee of the Rockefeller Library and the Sciences Library at Brown University, and also a generally avid user of libraries for both pleasure and for the meticulous research his work requires, libraries make a decidedly natural subject matter for Buzzell. Culminating from this work is a large sculptural painting evoking library bookshelves, its contents offering both inherent analysis and objective glimpses of aspects of the Providence Library system from its 1875 conception to the current day. Buzzell states, “Although there are failures and problems in the Providence Public Library, I hope the painting will reflect the dedicated people, the various community outreach programs, and the admirable mission statement of the PPL as well. I strive for this work to be an unbiased portrait of a complicated library system in a struggling post-industrial city in the present period of technological advancement and economic slowdown.”

William Buzzell creates highly detailed, painstakingly rendered paintings from everyday, rough materials, most commonly house paint and found wood. His use of 3D sculptural elements in many of his pieces is also noteworthy and characteristic of many of his works. Buzzell obsessively researches his topics and experiments visually with the organization and presentation of the synthesized information. Subjects explored range from class issues, identity, modern culture, science, history, and the arts and share the aesthetic of science fair projects, natural history museum displays, and public service announcements. Since 2005, William Buzzell has had several solo shows in New York, California, and Canada. Over the last eight years, Buzzell has also played his part in numerous group shows across the United States and has exhibited his artwork as far as London, Stolkholm, and the Philippines.

William Buzzell was born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island and is often associated with the now legendary art community that flourished there in the late 90’s. Some of his work was published in the late, Paper Rodeo, an anthology of Providence comics and art. Buzzell also attended Parsons The New School for Design in New York City where he pursued illustration. He currently resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as part of the Space 1026 artist collective. He loves to remind everyone that he is a proud Eagle Scout.

New Works, Matthew Palladino and Eric Shaw

New Works
Matthew Palladino and Eric Shaw
Opening Reception Friday, June 5th 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Space 1026
1026 Arch St. 2nd Floor, Philadelphia, PA
space1026.com

New Works, an exhibition featuring drawings by Matthew Palladino and Eric Shaw at Space 1026, running June 5th through the 25th. Opening reception First Friday of June from 7-10pm at 1026 Arch Street in Philadelphia.

Matthew Palladino’s new work plays with perceptions of race, gender, ghosts and alternative mental states. Through painting he explores representations of the human form in varying situations and fluctuating visibility.

Matthew Palladino was born and raised in San Francisco. He attended California College of Arts for two years, dropping out due to fiscal complications. He continued painting on his own and discovered alternative outlets to pursue his education. He is planning on moving to Philadelphia in the fall of this year.

Eric Shaw was conceived on a hill by the grace of the divine cacti button, he sprung into life eleven months prematurely. With young Eric strapped to her back, his mother set out and traveled all over New England, from radio station to radio station. Some stations accommodated the little duo, allowing Patricia Fox to project her voice all-wherever disco guidos’ ears sought her angelic voice.

His father, Senior Shaw-a bottle collector-who digs out deep in the Connecticut River Valley (of Western Mass), was working one day, when his spade hit a thin object. This object transformed Eric’s life-a heron bone pen! Anyone who examines a piece of Eric’s art closely, will notice the fine detail projected by the pen!

Following the Connecticut River further south to it’s tributary, one will come upon Enfield, Connecticut, home of the big pizza, Eric’s Mexican Papa, and Meme. Here, Eric was placed beneath the couch, where he germinated into what he is today. While deep beneath the couch, enveloped in darkness, Eric refined his color theory and mastery of the line. And then Eric returned to Methuen, Massachusetts, where the Plastic Factory distorted his mind even more. The rest are minor details. Eric Shaw seeks to establish a place in every individual’s mind. He hopes to see you soon.

Sketchy Stash

AHN|VHS is pleased to present an exhibition of sketch books by Bill McRight.

Primarily a printmaker working in linoleum block and silkscreen, McRight’s work is known for its extreme intricacy and for his bold, often absurd figures. These sketchbooks are McRight’s place for character and concept development, as well as impulsive composition. The figures in his books are drawn and redrawn with altered and increasingly exaggerated gestures and features, interspersed with pages of striking painterly abstraction and bursts of free associative text or overheard phrases. There seems to be a narrative at work, although the books leave no conclusion but to continue to another page. It is rare that McRight takes a figure directly from one of these books for use in a print; these forms are composed on impulse and are made to retain that immediacy. This looseness and experimentation with material and gesture is a surprising contrast to McRight’s rigid sculpting of forms in his prints and lino cuts in particular.

This is the first exhibition of the artist’s books since his 2005 MFA thesis exhibition at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

AHN|VHS will produce a limited edition reproduction of one of these sketch books concurrent with the exhibition.

Bill McRight is a printmaker working primarily in silkscreen and linoleum or wood block. In 2005 he received an MFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. His prints have been published by Cannonball Press. He lives in Philadelphia and is a current member of Space 1026.
