Sketchy Stash

AHN|VHS is pleased to present an exhibition of sketch books by Bill McRight.
Primarily a printmaker working in linoleum block and silkscreen, McRight’s work is known for its extreme intricacy and for his bold, often absurd figures. These sketchbooks are McRight’s place for character and concept development, as well as impulsive composition. The figures in his books are drawn and redrawn with altered and increasingly exaggerated gestures and features, interspersed with pages of striking painterly abstraction and bursts of free associative text or overheard phrases. There seems to be a narrative at work, although the books leave no conclusion but to continue to another page. It is rare that McRight takes a figure directly from one of these books for use in a print; these forms are composed on impulse and are made to retain that immediacy. This looseness and experimentation with material and gesture is a surprising contrast to McRight’s rigid sculpting of forms in his prints and lino cuts in particular.
This is the first exhibition of the artist’s books since his 2005 MFA thesis exhibition at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.
AHN|VHS will produce a limited edition reproduction of one of these sketch books concurrent with the exhibition.
Bill McRight is a printmaker working primarily in silkscreen and linoleum or wood block. In 2005 he received an MFA from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. His prints have been published by Cannonball Press. He lives in Philadelphia and is a current member of Space 1026.

Photo Lottery 2009 May 30th at AS220

Dear Friends,
As many of you know, I recently joined forces with a righteous local
arts organization in Providence RI by the name of AS220
(www.as220.org). Every other year AS220’s photo program holds a
“Photo Lottery,” which generates funds to cover the expenses of
running a darkroom/photography program that is open to the public and
the free of charge classes and access we provide to young people
(15-21) who would not otherwise have these opportunities. It is the
only public darkroom facility in the state and I think we would all
agree that its important to keep such a place afloat with our personal
support if we are able.
I’m writing to invite you to purchase a ticket for this year’s Photo
Lottery, which is coming up at the end of this month. Purchasing a
ticket for the Photo Lottery is not only a donation that supports a
great non-profit–it is an investment in growing an artistic
community–and it’s an exciting and potentially profitable move for
yourself! This year photographs have been donated from talented local
photographers, as well as from internationally famous photographers,
such as Danny Lyon (classic print from the Bikeriders series), Jock
Sturges (color panorama over 4 ft in length), Henry Horenstein, Denny
Moers and Mona Kuhn. There are many amazing photographs that will be
given away, some of which are worth big bucks! My favorite part about
the Photo Lottery, and something that makes it unique from many other
raffle-like fundraisers, is that EVERYONE who buys a ticket wins a
photograph.
Whether or not you live in Providence, it’s easy to participate by
buying a ticket at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/63945 If
you’re an out of town friend, as most of you are, postage anywhere in
the states is a $15 flat fee and I will personally assist the darkroom
to get your piece shipped out to you safely. Just let me know that
you signed up, so I can look out for your piece. We will make sure
that whoever draws the numbers, has nothing at stake in who wins the
pricey prizes, so don’t let that concern you one bit.
And whether or not you buy a ticket, if you can make it to Providence,
please attend the Photo Lottery celebration on the evening of May 30th
– free of charge. Here’s the website for more info:
http://www.as220.org/photolottery/ Or, to see some of the prints that
will be in the lottery: http://www.as220.org/photolottery/artists.htm
Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions about it and
to forward or blog this info in any way you see fit–please tell
anyone and everyone who you think might be interested!

The Moth, the Flame the Returning Comet, & the Golem

The Moth, the Flame the Returning Comet, & the Golem, a new exhibition featuring the work of Derek Weisberg and Matt Rebholz, opens at Space 1026 on First Friday, May 1, 7-10pm, at 1026 Arch Street in Philadelphia.
Through clay and ink Derek Weisberg and Matt Rebholz reflect on mortality and ethics, both artists pulling from traditional Jewish themes.
Matt Rebholz’s series of etchings are a loose reimaginging of the Gustav Meyrink novel Der Golem. The novel’s title character, based upon the clay automaton of Jewish folklore, wanders the streets of a corrupt and ruined city, blissfully unaware that he is a malfunctioning robot and not truly a man.
Similarly, Rebholz’s works are grotesque tableaux populated by a cast of damaged characters occupying a polluted and uneasy dreamscape – a fairytale in which deranged actors struggle to find their role in a stage play they do not quite understand. These elements conspire to form a series of intimate, allegorical vignettes pregnant with obscenity and metaphor. Within this environment, the Golem serves as a metaphor for humanity adrift in an absurdly dystopian world. The progression of the etchings reflects the artist’s evolving beliefs about contemporary society and the manifestations of consumption, ingestion, greed and expulsion within it.
Derek Weisberg creates emotional and psychological self-portraits attempting to reconcile a secular worldview with religious tradition. The artists explores themes of death and spirituality as a means to overcome personal loss.
Weisberg finds parallels between the act of making art to prolong the memory or metaphysical existence of lost loved ones, and the traditional Jewish belief that the actions of the living affect the voyage the departed soul takes through the afterlife.
Weisberg seeks a greater understanding of himself by using the creative process to explore ideas that can be uncomfortable and unfamiliar, and hopes to provoke similar self-discovery in his viewers. At its core, Weisberg’s works reflect a humanist ideology: searching for truth and universal morality based on the commonality of death as part the human condition.

“WHO IS BOZO TEXINO?” fIlm screening + THE EXTRAORDINAIRES & SWEATHEART

Join filmmaker BILL DANIEL for a special screening of his epic and beautiful documentary,
“WHO IS BOZO TEXINO?”
The black and white film shot in 16mm and Super8mm over 16-years chronicles the search for the source of a ubiquitous and mythic rail graffiti– a simple sketch of a character with an infinity-shaped hat and the scrawled moniker, “Bozo Texino”– a drawing seen on railcars for over 80 years. Daniel’s gritty film uncovers a secret society and it’s underground universe of hobo and railworker graffiti, and includes interviews with legendary boxcar artists.
The night will also include musical performances by:
THE EXTRAORDINAIRES
and
SWEATHEART
